Beating The Odds - Eric Lambert
When It feels like the whole world’s against you
And it’s hard to get out of the bed
You feel like your insides are empty
And the voices they scream in your head
You drop to your knees, beg and say please
And turn yourself over to the Gods
That’s just the first step, you’re well on your way
To finally Beatin’ The Odds
Oh that well of loneliness drowns you
You need to come up for some air
The climb can be steep, there’s help on the way
It will pull you right out of despair
You know you were meant to be more than you are now
It’s okay to dream and believe
Your standing up straight, you notice the nods
Your finally Beatin’ The Odds
Now don’t let your old mind fool you
Your just the way you been raised
Don’t take that old guilt upon you
Just look inside and you’ll be amazed
You feel like you were born on the bottom
You won’t quit till your on the top
You’ve lost your excuses the gallery applauds
Your finally Beatin’ The Odds
Now don’t buy the words they been sayin’
They want you to lay on the ground
Some like the tune you been playin’
They see you as wearing’ a crown
Well we’ve all had to climb our own mountain
To feel our face warmed by the sun
Just be the real you no need for facades
Your finally Beatin’ The Odds

Mother Earth

Mother Earth - Eric Lambert
Mother Earth has had enough
We’ve taken all she’ll give
We broke her heart and she got tough
She changed the way we live
There’s no amount of money
That can satisfy the cost
We finally pushed her way too far
And what we knew is lost
She’ll be here forever
To care for you and me
If we show her respect and love
And set aside our greed
She had to teach this lesson
And as much as it may hurt
She knows that it’s for our own good
Her will she must assert
Now we can learn from our mistakes
Or insist to have our way
And kick and scream and stomp our feet
And be the mischief of the day
She’ll be here forever
To care for you and me
If we show her respect and love
And set aside our greed
From the fires in California
To the quake in Katmandu
The tornadoes in music city
She’s angry, yes that’s true
The devastation in Puerto Rico
And the flooding across the plains
A world wide fatal virus
We’ve only us to blame
She’ll be here forever
To care for you and me
If we show her respect and love
And set aside our greed
I remember watching baseball
In the bleachers, in the sun
With thirty thousand screaming fans
Those afternoons were fun
And I remember hearing music
And dancing’ on the lawn
I cherish those old memories
What we did then is gone
She’ll be here forever
To care for you and me
If we show her respect and love
And set aside our greed

I’ll Dance When I’m A Hundred - Eric Lambert
Back when I was growing’ up
Folks told me what to do
Sit up straight don’t be late
Don’t be a clown in school
We’ll teach you how to be a man
Grow up and act your age
Not too much further down the road
I learned to turn the page
By the time that I turned thirty
I was livin’ the so called dream
A job and debt and credit cards
That same old corporate scheme
So I sold my stuff, bought a van And headed for the coast
Somewhere in Colorado
I poured myself a toast
Said I’ll dance when i’m a hundred
Swim the deep blue sea
Live up on a mountain and keep my spirit free
Age is just a number it won’t define me
I’ll dance when I’m a hundred
Come on dance with me
I’d like to play the fiddle
I said to my friend Vern
My man he said your fifty
And it’s too late to learn
So I went down to the music shop
And hung out with fiddlin’ Roy
Now I’m playin’ Old Joe Clark
And learnin’ Soldier’s Joy
Said I’ll dance when i’m a hundred
Swim the deep blue sea
Live up on a mountain and keep my spirit free
Age is just a number it won’t define me
I’ll dance when I’m a hundred
Come on dance with me
Reflecting back at seventy
With more memories than sense
I’ll keep on pushing’ forward
I’m not sittin’ on the fence
I’ve got a brand new girlfriend
We love and sing all day
And when we finally settle down
There’s one thing left to say
Said I’ll dance when i’m a hundred
Swim the deep blue sea
Live up on a mountain and keep my spirit free
Age is just a number it won’t define me
I’ll dance when I’m a hundred
Come on dance with me

Found Out My Daddy Was Wrong - Eric Lambert
When I was a boy my daddy said son
It’s your God given right to own you a gun
You’ll fight to defend it hold onto it tight
Deep down in my heart I thought he was right
It was my seventh birthday and I wanted a bike
Or a super nintendo or a game that I liked
When I told my friends they all nodded and said
It’s your God given right to defend till your dead
See I always thought it was gospel
As simple as singin’ a song
My heart was broken the day my world changed
And I found out my daddy was wrong
On into my teens I learned to play the guitar
Started doin’ some shows on the road
By twenty years old I was livin’ in Nashville
Bound to reap silver and gold
When we boarded a plane for a big show in Vegas
I thought I was livin’ the dream
It was there I first heard the gun shots
It was there I heard a young woman scream
See I always thought it was gospel
As simple as singin’ a song
My heart was broken the day my world changed
And I found out my daddy was wrong
Aurora and Columbine, Texas too
The tragedies are forgotten till the gun points at you
One morning in Newtown they broke all the rules
And twenty sweet babies didn’t come home from school
I was standing backstage when I reached for my gun
We had no choice but to turn tail and run
A lifetime of believin’ just burned to the ground
Among the dead and the wounded the truth I had found
See I always thought it was gospel
As simple as singin’ a song
My heart was broken the day my world changed
And I found out my daddy was wrong

We Need To Learn To Love

We Need To Learn To Love - Eric Lambert
I first met Jimmy when I went to High School
He was a black boy and I was all white
We loved the music, that’s all that mattered
We told the old folks it would be alright
We used to hang out and play the guitar
Drank lot’s of beer in his daddy’s old car
Saw lot’s of shows at a club downtown
Went out and got some breakfast when the sun come around
No one was born here a racist
No one was born here to hate
We only know what we’ve always been taught
We need to learn to love before it’s too late
We need to learn to love before it’s too late
My mom and dad they were raised down south
Never heard a hateful word come out of there mouth
Back in my hometown the message I’d hear
Came from misguided souls full of anger and fear
No one was born here a racist
No one was born here to hate
We only know what we’ve always been taught
We need to learn to love before it’s too late
We need to learn to love before it’s too late
Woke up on Sunday and heard there’d been trouble
At the bus stop near the liquor store on Saturday night
Where a broken old drifter was livin’ a nightmare
He shot down poor Jimmy then took his own life
Jimmy left a mother a sister and a brother
The world kept on spinnin’ but my best friend was gone
He could’ve been President he could’ve cured cancer
I cried and I cried lordy it was so wrong
No one was born here a racist
No one was born here to hate
We only know what we’ve always been taught
We need to learn to love before it’s too late
We need to learn to love before it’s too late

Let's All Get In The Way

Let's All Get In The Way - Eric Lambert
Born a sharecropper’s son in Alabama
Fought a non violent fight for mankind
Stood tall on the bridge there in Selma
Didn’t backdown from speaking his mind
Was arrested and beaten and rose up again
Laid his life on the line to be free
He was there when colored people won the right to vote
Made good trouble for you and for me
John Lewis an American Hero
Is alive in my memory today
Like a beacon he’s standing there sayin’
Let’s all get in the way
He was honored and elected to Congress
And he served there for seventeen terms
He was awarded the Medal Of Freedom
An award he so proudly had earned
He was a champion of non violent protest
A lesson he learned from Dr. King
He was admired by members of both parties
He implored them to do the right thing
John Lewis an American Hero
Is alive in my memory today
Like a beacon he’s standing there sayin’
Let’s all get in the way
Now the people have suddenly awakened
We saw George Floyd get murdered in the street
A crime that’s been going on for decades
It’s acceptance is becoming obsolete
And the cities are alive with cries for justice
An awareness John taught us with love
The man was a giant, strong as Goliath
Peaceful and gentle like a dove
John Lewis an American Hero
Is alive in my memory today
Like a beacon he’s standing there sayin’
Let’s all get in the way
John Lewis an American Hero
Is alive in my memory today
On a mountain he’s standing there sayin’
Let’s all get in the way

Never Going Back Home

Never Going Back Home - Eric Lambert
Joe woke up a shakin’
To a cry in the night
His mom and dad
Had another fight
They been doin’ this dance
For as long as he could spell
Some days were happy
Now most days are hell
He said what can I do
I’m just a kid
I keep askin’ myself
What it was that I did
I’m so tired
Of bein’ scared and alone
When I run away
I’m never goin’ back home
His dad was yellin’ bout the supper
He said it didn’t taste right
His mom was yellin’ bout the drinkin’
The stayin’ out all night
His daddy took a swing
His momma fell to the ground
Joe’s a cryin’ in the dark
With his head hung down
He said what can I do
I’m just a kid
I keep askin’ myself
What it was that I did
I’m so tired
Of bein’ scared and alone
When I run away
I’m never goin’ back home
He learned to live and hide in the shadows
All he wants to do is disappear
Joe saw a little boy
It was like lookin’ in the mirror
Joe could see it in his eyes
The boy was full of fear
Joe said I’ve got a story
See I’m a lot like you
I know exactly what your goin’ through
The boy said
What can I do
I’m just a kid
I keep askin’ myself
What it was that I did
I’m so tired
Of bein’ scared and alone
When I run away
I’m never goin’ back home
When I run away
I'm never goin' Back Home

The Music Set Me Free

The Music Set Me Free - Eric Lambert
I was staring alone in a crowded room
Everyone was speaking their mind
Invisible tho, they didn’t have a clue
Bout the me I was gonna find
I sat down with a friend who was playin’ guitar
He showed me the chords to his tune
The clouds split wide open and I found my voice
A bright light took over the room
I’m in love with the world when I play the guitar
It’s the best version of me
Not a care or a worry not a wound or a scar
The music set me free
The music it set me free
The guitar was my ticket out of the old neighborhood
The steel mills and runnin’ the streets
To stages and places I’d never have known
If I hadn’t followed my dreams
I’m in love with the world when I play the guitar
It’s the best version of me
Not a care or a worry not a wound or a scar
The music set me free
The music it set me free
So I still have my fair share of problems
I can still hurt and blue I can be
But it gave me the courage to forge my own way
And live joyous and happy and free
I’m in love with the world when I play the guitar
It’s the best version of me
Not a care or a worry not a wound or a scar
The music set me free
The music it set me free
