Our tribute to the late great American Hero John Lewis.His story is well known and the fight for inclusion and equality that he dedicated his life to continues to this day The term “Colored People” is used in the tune with nothing but respect for Mr Lewis and all who helped him in the push to secure voting rights for African Americans in the 1960’s. John Lewis left us with many inspiring quotes including “Let’s All Get In The Way”.

Born a sharecropper’s son in Alabama
Fought a non violent fight for mankind
Stood tall on the bridge there in Selma
Didn’t backdown from speaking his mind

Was arrested and beaten and rose up again
Laid his life on the line to be free
He was there when colored people won the right to vote
Made good trouble for you and for me

John Lewis an American Hero
Is alive in my memory today

He was honored and elected to Congress
And he served there for seventeen terms
He was awarded the Medal Of Freedom
An award he so proudly had earned
He was a champion of non violent protest
A lesson he learned from Dr. King
He was admired by members of both parties
He implored them to do the right thing

Now the people have suddenly awakened
We saw George Floyd get murdered in the street
A crime that’s been going on for decades
It’s acceptance is becoming obsolete

And the cities are alive with cries for justice
An awareness John taught us with love
The man was a giant, strong as Goliath
Peaceful and gentle like a dove
