It is simply a story and a true one at that.The young man in the song was comfortable with what he had been taught and what he believed in until he witnessed the massacre in Las Vegas. Even though he and everyone backstage were armed, he shared, “We had no choice but to turn tail and run”.

Deep down in my heart I thought he was right
It was my seventh birthday and I wanted a bike
Or a super nintendo or a game that I liked
When I told my friends they all nodded and said

My heart was broken the day my world changed
And I found out my daddy was wrong
On into my teens I learned to play the guitar
Started doin’ some shows on the road
By twenty years old I was livin’ in Nashville
Bound to reap silver and gold

When we boarded a plane for a big show in Vegas
I thought I was livin’ the dream
It was there I first heard the gun shots
It was there I heard a young woman scream

And I found out my daddy was wrong

Aurora and Columbine, Texas too
The tragedies are forgotten till the gun points at you
One morning in Newtown they broke all the rules
And twenty sweet babies didn’t come home from school

I was standing backstage when I reached for my gun
We had no choice but to turn tail and run
A lifetime of believin’ just burned to the ground
Among the dead and the wounded the truth I had found
